What is constructivism? What is the central idea? Who are the main proponents?
I pursued my Ph.D. in Education more than 2 decades ago when Constructivism wasn’t much in practice in India. Even today, it is not practiced in true sense although discussed often.
I have answered some of the questions asked by my distinguished followers about Constructivism/Constructivist Aporoach.

Constructivism is a theory of learning that emphasizes how people actively build (or construct) their own knowledge and understanding of the world.
Core Ideas of Constructivism:
- Learners are active participants.
- Prior knowledge: Learners interpret new information through the lens of what they already know.
- Learning is social. Interaction with others (peers, teachers, community) shapes understanding.
- Contextual learning – Knowledge is tied to real-world situations
- Teacher as a guide, facilitator who provides tools, environments, and scaffolding
In short: Constructivism = Learning by doing + Learning with others + Building meaning from experiences.
